J. "Jack" Hickey
Member, Sequoia Healthcare District Board of Directors
Taxpayer's Candidate for San Mateo County
Supervisor
Election June 8, 2010

Candidate Statement
Occupation: Retired Research Scientist Age: 75
We’ve got trouble in San Mateo County
The County budget is $1.46B above the Gann Expenditure Limit($395M). Outrageous!
By catering to myriad special interest groups, Supervisors created programs which are unsustainable. Luxurious retirement benefits for public employees and elected officials is one example.
The 9.25% sales tax is already too high!
1991 Supervisors sought 1/2% sales tax to fund yet another education bureaucracy. 2006 and 2008 Supervisors sought 1/8% Parks and Recreation sales tax. In 2000, voters rejected Forensic Lab Bonds. It was built anyway. My campaigns helped defeat these taxes.
Public Policy needs an overhaul. Tax dollars collected by Washington and Sacramento, trickle down to local government with strings attached. With your support, I will lead efforts to restore common sense and local control to government.
I support District elections and Instant Runoff (Preferential Voting) to derail the “good old boy” network.
I propose:
Enabling “choice” through Property Tax Credits for education.
Tax bills which facilitate charitable giving.
Revenue producing public land use.
Decriminalization and taxation of marijuana, not a new jail. Supervisor initiated recall elections.
I do not accept union contributions extorted from workers.
I am a 4 year Navy veteran.
